Salem Bearcats & The Arts: A Night at the Opera

Join alumni, parents and Willamette friends for the next event in Willamette's Salem Bearcats & The Arts series celebrating Salem’s unique arts scene and the WU community.

For this event in the series, we'll gather on campus to celebrate Willamette's Dramatic Vocal Arts program by attending a special preview performance of dueling operas composed by infamous rivals, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. First heard in 1786, Mozart and Salieri's operas premiered in competition and in opposite corners of the Vienna Palace with the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II looking on. Mozart famously lost to the more well-known (at the time) Salieri, but today's 2020 audience will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite opera and perhaps rewrite history!

The unique interactive performance will have actors break the fourth wall and portray characters portraying other characters in scenes-within-scenes. The production will also ask the audience to question several concepts, including: Who decides whether a composer or their art is great? This special performance is a preview show, so our guests will be the first to see and experience it live!

The event will also include some pre-show activities, including meet-and-greets with both casts and an introduction to Willamette's new Zeller Opera Chair and Director of Dramatic Vocal Arts, Katherine Skovira.
